On Trekkie Monster and Lucy the Slut

Angela and I went to see Avenue Q this summer, and what a riot it was! We laughed hard. In fact, somewhat embarrassingly, we laughed much louder than anyone else in our area of the theater. Then a woman spilled her red wine into Angela’s bag and sneaked away. We missed all this, of course. Yes, that’s how hard we were laughing.

Our hearts go out to Trekkie Monster, in particular.

That said, we were sad about the way puppet Lucy was sex-shamed.  “Lucy the Slut,” as she’s known on the show, doesn’t receive the tolerance and acceptance that other characters do. We learn little about Lucy’s queerness or uniqueness. Instead, she is the “slut” who almost breaks up a beautiful sexual friendship. We don’t get to see any humility in her treatment, and there isn’t even a nod towards the the fact that having numerous sexual partners suits many women down to the ground.

Was SlutWalk for nothing, Avenue Q?

That said, we heartily recommend that you see Avenue Q. We laughed so hard we cried. And we love these characters, especially good old Trekkie Monster. A triumph of a show.

And as a postscript, if you’re all about the hot and queer, take a look at Con, Book 1: You Can Play It Safe When You’re Dead (downloadable free, for now) and watch this space for Huddle: Sex With Sporty Queers.

I loved Avenue Q! Like you though, I felt a bit uncomfortable with the portrayal of Lucy. Trekkie was fabulous though. The internet is indeed for porn!

Hi, Heather! Ah, you saw Avenue Q too? You know, it’s funny about Lucy — I wonder if they’ve ever thought to change her role/the script a little. That said, yes, I *adore* Trekkie! Porn-positive, ain’t no doubt!

      Thanks so much for commenting!

Yes I saw it a year or so ago, and I often listen to the soundtrack too! I guess the Lucy character provides an essential obstacle to the main, burgeoning relationship, but surely they could have shown that in a slightly less slut-shamey way. Perhaps they should hire us as sex positive script consultants 😉
